Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was one of the most influential architects and designers from Denmark in the twentieth century, and through its provocative blend of functional integrity and sculptural grace, its influence was extended to become synonymous with modern and uniform Scandinavian design. Beginning to work as a mason and before getting into a degree in architecture, Jacobsen won a lifelong love of materials and proportion. Influenced by the work of Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and other modernists, during a trip to Berlin at the end of the 1920s, like many other architects was dedicated to working in small private commissions.
